Start with a speed test
Run a speed test on the device you stream from — not just your phone in the same room as the router. Around 15 Mbps or more is a sensible target for consistent high-quality streaming, and more if several people stream at once.
Optimise your Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is often the weakest link. A few simple changes can make a big difference.
Router placement
Place your router centrally and in the open — not in a cupboard or behind the TV. Thick walls and metal objects block signal.
Use the 5 GHz band
5 GHz Wi-Fi is faster and less congested than 2.4 GHz, though it has shorter range.
Consider mesh Wi-Fi
In larger homes, a mesh system extends strong coverage to every room.
Go wired where you can
An Ethernet cable delivers the most stable connection. If running a cable isn't practical, powerline adapters use your home's electrical wiring to carry the connection to the TV.
Reduce competing traffic
Large downloads, game updates and cloud backups can all compete for bandwidth. Schedule them for overnight, or use your router's quality-of-service (QoS) settings to prioritise your streaming device.
Keep devices and apps updated
Firmware and app updates often include performance improvements. Restarting your router and streaming device every so often also clears temporary glitches.
