Smart TV platforms explained

Smart TVs sold in the UK mainly run one of three platforms: Samsung's Tizen, LG's webOS and Google's Android TV / Google TV (used by Sony, Philips, TCL, Hisense and others). Each has its own app store, and app availability differs between them.

Samsung (Tizen)

Models from around 2017 onwards generally have the best app support. Apps are installed from Samsung Apps.

LG (webOS)

Apps come from the LG Content Store. Keeping firmware updated improves compatibility.

Android TV / Google TV

Uses the Google Play Store, which tends to offer the widest choice of compatible player apps.

Checking compatibility before you buy

Find your TV's model number (usually on a sticker on the back or in Settings → Support). Share it with your provider before ordering so they can confirm a compatible app is available for your model.

When to use a streaming stick instead

If your TV is older or lacks a suitable app, an inexpensive streaming stick such as a Fire TV Stick or Chromecast with Google TV is often the simplest solution — and frequently faster than the TV's built-in processor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Smart TV better than a streaming stick?
Not necessarily. Streaming sticks are often quicker and receive app updates more consistently than older Smart TVs.
Should I connect my TV with a cable?
An Ethernet cable usually gives the most stable connection for streaming if it's practical.
